Playlist taste notes for 11 new playlists, Shanty download quirks

taste.md: briefs and feedback for Fall, Skatepark Punks, Lo-fi Beats,
Game Soundtracks, Big Gay Pregame, Pop Italiano, Rap Italiano, Musica
Latina, Ska, Basic Alt-Rock and i still remember myspace. Corrects the
System of a Down note, which recorded a two-song limit he never set.

SKILL.md: downloads stay untagged until the pipeline job runs; the
search preview can differ from what the downloader fetches; Owned
answers can come from compilation-tagged rows.

Picnic version"). Pick the original unless asked.
- Deleting tracks or files from the library is irreversible and gets blocked
by the permission check. Write a script for Connor to run instead.
- New downloads sit untagged in `/data/downloads` with YouTube's artist
spelling (e.g. "Amyl and The Sniffers") until the `pipeline` job in
`scheduler_state` runs (every 3 hours). It tags from MusicBrainz and moves
files into `/music`; track IDs survive. Check the tags after it runs, since
it sometimes picks a compilation or split release.
- The `ytmusic_search.py` preview doesn't always match what the downloader
fetches: "Marracash Badabum" previewed correctly and still downloaded a
different song. Check every new row's title, not just its artist.
- A watch can answer `Owned` for a song the title lookup missed, because the
row is tagged "Various Artists" or credited to a featured artist
("Tropicana" is Boomdabash). Search `tracks` by title alone.

@@ -10,6 +10,17 @@ doesn't think about it.
- Nostalgia window is roughly 2004–2016 (ages 12–24).
- One genre per playlist. Italian rap (Fabri Fibra, Ghali, Willie Peyote,
Dargen D'Amico) is its own genre to him; keep it out of hip-hop lists.
### Italian
- He started on Italian music with Sanremo 2024 and is learning the
language. Two playlists: Pop Italiano (pop around Sanremo 2024: Angelina
Mango, Annalisa, Rose Villain, Elodie, Clara) and Rap Italiano (Fabri
Fibra, Ghali, Willie Peyote, Dargen D'Amico, plus classics).
- "Female-led" narrows the pop feel but isn't a rule; duos and features are
fine (2026-10-27).
- Mahmood fits the rap list in small doses (2026-10-27).
- Discovery is part of the point here; unfamiliar songs are welcome
(2026-10-27).
- Kanye: golden era through Yeezus (2013) only. Nothing after.

Fish, Goldfinger.
- Skipped: Less Than Jake – Gainesville Rock City (2026-10-26).
### Third-wave ska (Ska playlist)
- "Classic to me": Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, Less Than Jake, Skatune
Network and JER. Fun and high-energy, ideally upbeat songs with sad
lyrics. Pure ska, as opposed to Lifting, which will drift (2026-10-27).
- Skatune Network covers are effectively new songs; a Fall Out Boy cover is
fine here even though Fall Out Boy itself was too pop for Skatepark Punks
(2026-10-27).
- Wants studio versions, not live, wherever a song exists in both.
### '90s/'00s alt-rock (Basic Alt-Rock)
- Nostalgic radio alt-rock: CAKE, Eve 6, up to Audioslave and the garage
revival (Jet, White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand). He calls it "super basic"
and crowd-pleasing, and wanted that in the name (2026-10-27).
- One song each of Green Day, The Offspring and blink-182 fits here
(2026-10-27).
- Cut: Marcy Playground "Sex and Candy", Semisonic "Closing Time" ("lame")
(2026-10-27).
### Heavy rock
- Likes Rage Against the Machine; mixes well into ska-punk for lifting.
- System of a Down: fine, but at most two songs per playlist.
- System of a Down: fine in small doses; he didn't listen to them much.
Corrected 2026-10-27: an earlier note said "at most two songs per
playlist" as if it were his rule. He never set it; it was generalized
from the Lifting playlist happening to have two.
- Skipped all Deftones (2026-10-26).
### Riot grrrl, women-fronted indie rock and electroclash
@@ -71,6 +103,73 @@ doesn't think about it.
- Asked for The Devil Makes Three "All Hail"; it replaced "Spinning Like a
Top", the lightest of their four (2026-10-27).
### Pop-punk and skate punk (Skatepark Punks)
- Party playlist modeled on what Spotify's "Skatepark Punks" used to be.
Nostalgia hits (Blink-182, Lit, SR-71, The Offspring, Green Day) that make
people his age say "oh yeah", alternated with skate punk old and new (PUP,
FIDLAR, Op Ivy, The Dead Milkmen "Punk Rock Girl").
- Too pop for it: Wavves "King of the Beach" and Fall Out Boy "Sugar, We're
Goin Down" were cut from the draft (2026-10-27).
- From outside his library he took Pennywise "Bro Hymn", NOFX "Linoleum",
Descendents "Hope", Amyl and the Sniffers "Hertz", and The Chats "Smoko"
(near the end). Passed on Millencolin, Bad Religion, Teenage Bottlerocket,
The Menzingers, Ramones and Suicidal Tendencies (2026-10-27).
- Wants more Amyl and the Sniffers in his library generally (2026-10-27).
- Wants his library as an influence, not a boundary; open to new music in
every playlist (2026-10-27).
### Work music: lo-fi and game soundtracks
- Instrumental background for work. He knows little about either genre and
used to just search "lofi" or "Hollow Knight soundtrack"; fidelity matters
less than for other playlists. Kept as two playlists (2026-10-27).
- No words: cut Nujabes "Feather" for its rap verses (2026-10-27).
- No piano covers. Piano grabs his attention; string covers (guitar, harp)
are preferred, other instruments are fine. Piano-led originals are fine
if soft or over a beat (Wet Hands, Flower Dance kept, 2026-10-27).
- Nintendo and the base Stardew Valley soundtracks aren't on YouTube Music;
use covers (John Oeth guitar for Zelda, Sleeping Phoenix fingerstyle guitar
for Stardew, HarpistKT harp). His Silksong "Choral Chambers" is a Luke
Pickman cover.
### Party pop (Big Gay Pregame)
- For hanging out with a younger crowd, 22-26, mostly women and gay men:
party music they like that he also likes. Kesha is the anchor (141 songs in
his library).
- Likes some Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, Doechii, Sabrina Carpenter and Billie
Eilish; Big Freedia is good (2026-10-27).
- Not for him: Lady Gaga, Beyoncé. Tyler, The Creator doesn't fit this
playlist (2026-10-27).
- Electroclash is a maybe: "a few" mixed in to carry his taste (Le Tigre,
Gossip, Peaches). Unsure about Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Heads Will Roll" remix;
will listen (2026-10-27).
- Peaches "Fuck the Pain Away" is the intended 3rd electroclash song; it
failed on the YouTube age check and needs the login in Shanty settings.
### Spanish-language (Música Latina)
- He's barely explored it. Likes Bad Bunny "well enough" and Rosalía. The
Spanish songs in his library came from looking for similar music, not
from liking those songs, so don't treat them as endorsements (2026-10-27).
- The goal is learning the language and pop culture: what Latinos his age
grew up with and hear now. He asked for one big, broad playlist instead
of one genre, grouped by style so he can find what he likes, then
refine into narrower playlists later. The one-genre rule doesn't apply to
this playlist (2026-10-27).
- Liked the 2000s reggaetón picks (Gasolina, Atrévete) (2026-10-27).
### MySpace-era emo (i still remember myspace)
- Middle school, about 2003-2008. He listened to the Beatles then, out of
contrarianism, but wants the actual popular emo of the time.
- Dislikes the glossy pop-emo sound: Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects,
Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah", Angels & Airwaves. Likes Yellowcard
"Ocean Avenue", which is punchier. One Fall Out Boy song is OK as a nod to
their prominence (2026-10-27).
- Panic! at the Disco is good; a little Simple Plan is OK (2026-10-27).
- Wants the harder MySpace side: Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Fort Minor,
Evanescence. Some screaming is fine; he just didn't listen to much
screamo (2026-10-27).
- Undecided on Dresden Dolls-type dark cabaret; one song ("Coin-Operated
Boy") is in as a test (2026-10-27).
### Hip-hop
- Likes: Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Tyler, The Creator, Mac Miller,
Open Mike Eagle.
